Sustainability — Lombok Boat Charter’s Environmental & Community Commitments

Sustainability and Community Impact: Our Core Commitment

Preserving Paradise for Future Generations

At Lombok Boat Charter, we believe that the stunning natural beauty of Lombok and the Gili Islands is not a commodity to be exploited, but a precious treasure to be protected. Our business is intrinsically linked to the health of our marine ecosystems and the well-being of our local communities. For this reason, sustainability is not a marketing buzzword for us; it is a fundamental principle that guides every decision we make. Our goal is to operate a business that is regenerative, leaving a positive and lasting impact on the environment and the people of Lombok.

Our Environmental Commitments

We have implemented a multi-faceted strategy to minimize our ecological footprint and actively contribute to marine conservation.

  • Active Marine Conservation Support: We are proud corporate sponsors of the Gili Eco Trust. A portion of every charter fee is donated directly to their coral reef restoration and sea turtle conservation programs. Our crew members also volunteer their time for beach clean-ups and Biorock maintenance dives.
  • Strict No-Anchor Policy on Reefs: Our captains are rigorously trained to use designated mooring buoys or to anchor only in sandy-bottom areas. We have a zero-tolerance policy for anchoring on or near coral reefs, a practice that causes devastating, long-term damage.
  • Eliminating Single-Use Plastics: All our vessels are 100% free of single-use plastic bottles. We provide guests with chilled, filtered water in reusable flasks and serve all beverages in glassware. Snacks and meals are sourced from local partners who use biodegradable packaging like banana leaves.
  • Carbon Footprint Reduction & Offsetting: Our modern fleet is equipped with fuel-efficient engines that meet international emission standards. Furthermore, we partner with the Indonesian foundation Jejak.in to track our fuel consumption and offset our entire operational carbon footprint through mangrove reforestation projects right here in West Nusa Tenggara.
  • Responsible Waste Management: We practice a “pack in, pack out” philosophy. All waste generated on our charters is carefully sorted and brought back to the mainland for proper recycling and disposal, alleviating the waste management burden on the small Gili Islands.

Our Community Commitments

We are dedicated to ensuring that the economic benefits of tourism are shared equitably and contribute to the strength and resilience of local communities.

  • Prioritizing Local Employment: Over 90% of our team, including all our captains and boat crew, are hired from local villages in the Pemenang and Senggigi areas. We offer competitive wages, comprehensive health insurance (BPJS), and opportunities for professional training and certification.
  • Supporting Local Economies: We have a ‘local first’ procurement policy. Our onboard catering features fresh produce from Lombok’s farms, our fish is purchased from local fishermen (never from endangered species), and the beautiful textiles on our boats are hand-woven in traditional Sasak villages like Sukarara.
  • Community Empowerment Fund: We contribute 1% of our annual profits to a dedicated community fund. This fund, managed in consultation with local village leaders (kepala desa), supports initiatives focused on youth education and environmental awareness programs in the communities where our employees live.
  • Preserving Cultural Heritage: We actively maintain and operate traditional jukung boats as part of our fleet. This not only offers guests an authentic experience but also provides income for local craftsmen who possess the rare skills to build and maintain these iconic vessels.

When you book a private charter with us, you are not just buying a day of fun on the water; you are investing in a sustainable future for Lombok.

Empowering local communities through responsible tourism

The sapphire waters surrounding Lombok and its satellite islands cradle vibrant coral gardens and a rich tapestry of marine life, a breathtaking spectacle that Lombok Boat Charter strives to protect for generations to come. But the commitment to preserving paradise extends beyond the reefs; it deeply intertwines with the socio-economic well-being of the vibrant communities that call these islands home. True luxury travel, in the Condé Nast Traveler philosophy, extends beyond physical comfort to include cultural immersion and ethical engagement. This holistic approach ensures that the benefits of high-end tourism ripple outwards, creating a more resilient and equitable local economy, preserving the unique character of Lombok for visitors and residents alike.
